The Perfect Gift this Christmas

What was the best Christmas gift that you ever received?

I remember when I was a child, my favorite gift of all time was Ballerina Barbie.  I remember how badly I wanted that doll, and the excitement of finding her under the tree that one snowy Christmas morning.  She brought me many years of happiness.

But where is she now?  I honestly have no idea.

Even the gifts that we consider to be “the best” (by the world’s standards) will be gone one day.  They will wear out, get used up, or become something that we no longer want or need.

But Christmas is not about the giving and receiving of material gifts.   So, what is Christmas?  It is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.  So let’s take a closer look at God’s gift to us.  The perfect gift.

The perfect gift is not fancy; it is not perfectly wrapped and tied with a bow.  Our perfect gift  was born in a stable.  He didn’t have a crib.  He was poor by the world’s standards.  This perfect gift came in the most humble of wrappings, and yet is truly the most precious gift of all.  In this package came the ultimate gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ.

Do we deserve this gift?  Absolutely not.  Our response to this gift was crucifixion.  We put Jesus Christ on the cross.  And yet “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8 ESV).

Christmas isn’t about Ballerina Barbie, or giving or receiving the best material gifts.  This life is all about knowing the God who created us and offers us the most sacrificial gift of all.   A perfect gift that offers eternal life, and that can be shared with others.

Stop worrying about buying just the right gift to place under the Christmas tree this year.  Instead, focus on the true meaning of Christmas.  The real gift has already been purchased and  Jesus has already paid the price.  In full.

Make Him known to those around you, and share the perfect gift this Christmas season!
