Stop Making Excuses: It’s YOUR Health
Has this ever happened to you?
Enough is enough. You can’t button your favorite pair of jeans, and you are not about buy a new pair in a larger size. The time has come to take action. You’ve decided to start a new diet and exercise program on Monday morning. The grocery shopping is done (all healthy foods, of course), and you may have even bought yourself some brand new workout clothes. After all, you are making every effort to make a change, right? You are determined this time. Nothing is going to stop you from reaching your goal. That’s what you say…until Day 1.
Monday morning comes, and your alarm goes off at 5:00 am. You hit the snooze button once. Twice. Three times. Before you know it, you’ve overslept and find yourself running late for work. There’s no time for exercise. In your rush to make it to work on time, you forgot to bring your lunch. You skipped breakfast, and of course someone in your office brought in bagels. You convince yourself that one bagel won’t entirely sabotage your meal plan. You’ll get your workout done after work. You can do this!
Then, it’s time for lunch. Everyone is ordering pizza. And Mexican food. You remember that you left your lunch at home. Before you know it, you find yourself happily munching on tacos and tortilla chips. At this point, you tell yourself that there is no reason to workout when you get home. You will just wait until tomorrow. Or, better yet, why not just wait until next Monday to get a fresh, clean start?
This scenario, or one just like it, has happened to me more times than I care to admit. I would also use every special occasion or celebration to sabotage my efforts to start my new, healthy lifestyle. I want you to know that it doesn’t have to be this way.
You’ve probably heard the expression, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” While this is true, the plan alone simply isn’t enough. This is only the first step. Daily execution is the only way to reach your goals. So, what can you do to ensure that your next endeavor will be a success? Here are 5 tips to stop making excuses and to start getting healthy and losing weight:
- Get in touch with your “why.” Write down your goals. This means digging deep to figure out your why. Getting to the root of your struggles and what is driving you to pursue a healthy lifestyle can be the key to your success Take the time to pinpoint what truly motivates you.
- Daily Accountability: You may think that you don’t need it, but trust me…you do. I offer various fitness coaching packages and have found that daily accountability makes all the difference. You are more likely to succeed if you know that someone is monitoring our progress and you are being supported and celebrated along the way!
- Find that Consistency in your Daily Routine: John Maxwell said, “The secret of your success is found in your daily routine.” Make a list and commit to the daily activities that will lead to results!
- Push through. Life happens. You will struggle at times. It might be with getting the workouts done, avoiding the cookies and other desserts at the office party or just wanting to give up. Go back to Item #1 (above). Your why is greater than these excuses. Whatever you do, don’t give up!
- Celebrate milestones: Make a list of milestones that are worth celebrating. Reward yourself for each one that you achieve during your journey. But please (please!) don’t celebrate with food! There are so many wonderful ways to indulge yourself with zero calories! Wouldn’t you love a one-hour Swedish massage? Tickets to that big summer concert? A new outfit? Whatever it is, work for it, and reward yourself.
If you aren’t careful, you can easily become your own biggest enemy. With God, the proper mindset, daily accountability, and the willingness/desire to change (having a strong enough “why”), you can stop sabotaging ourselves, lose weight and become an encouragement to others. Don’t wait any longer. Make a plan and let’s get started!
